Social isolation and loneliness have been identified as significant public health problems. Evidence shows that social isolation and loneliness may cause health risks including:
Increased risk of premature death from all causes, rivaling the risks associated with smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity.
Increased risk of dementia, heart disease and stroke.
Higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide.
Ken Helander with the Alzheimer's Resource of Alaska has worked with older adults and their families for 45 years. He'll share insights about loneliness as well as strategies that decrease loneliness and boredom for older adults. Following the presentation, Stacey Shriner from the Alaska Botanical Garden will provide a horticultural experience to help reduce loneliness.
