Alaska Botanical Garden offers field trips in the Garden or to your school year-round!


In-Person Field Trips (in the Garden or at your school)

The Garden is here to help you with all your field trip needs, whether you need us to come to you, or you wish to get away from the classroom and come to us! Programs offered year-round, Monday-Friday. All programs in the Garden take place outside along our 1/2 mile paved loop.

Programs in the Garden are $10/student (* some programs have different pricing depending on materials) $100 minimum charge if less than 10 students.

Programs at your school site are $75 per class/teacher (there is a $0.65/mile charge for schools in the Mat-Su Valley or Girdwood)

*Our Plants as Medicine and Garden Nutrition programs have special pricing due to material costs; $12/student in the Garden; $95 per class/teacher at your school site. Contact the Education Director (education@alaskabg.org to discuss pricing).

Schools are welcome year-round for self-guided field trips at a rate of $7/student. Email the Program Director at education@alaskabg.org to schedule a date.

  • Prepare to get down and dirty in this journey into the world of decomposers! Students will create a recipe for soil and get up close and personal with worms that live in the Garden.

  • Discover how Spruce Bark Beetles, Red Squirrels and Bears all depend on the Boreal Forest for their survival. Play interactive games to learn about the life cycle of each of these animals and how they impact their forested ecosystem.

  • Investigate seeds and seed dispersal throughout the forest. Get up close and personal with 3 highly adapted Boreal plants and look at how they survive Alaska's harsh winters.

  • How does a garden grow? Students explore what a plant needs to grow and get to plant their own seed to take home. A guided tour around the gardens will explain the difference between annuals and perennials and give students the chance to taste fresh veggies from the gardens.

  • Learn about pollinators of AK; explore flower parts and dissect a flower; identify invasive plants and learn what you can do to help.

  • Discover common plants we use to heal our bodies; make your own lip balm or herbal tea and discover key vitamins in some of our common fruits and vegetables. *This program is $12/student to help cover all tea or lip balm making supplies.

    Grades 3rd and above may book for chapstick or medicinal teas

    Grades pre-k-2nd grade may book for the medicinal teas

  • This program combines literacy and movement and yoga while exploring the gardens. Students read and learn different yoga movements that mimic plant life cycles. Improve both student’s and teacher’s mental and physical health while visiting the Garden!

  • Students become chefs for a day as they learn about key vitamins our bodies need and learn to prepare a plant based snack. Produce from the Garden is available for this program in Summer and Fall. *This program is $12/student to help cover all materials.


Family Nights and Before School Programs

Garden staff are available to provide programming both before school and after school. We can provide hands-on and interactive gardening and science related activities for your before-school club or for a school-wide family night.

Programs are $75 per site visit/booth (price includes all material costs)
