Alaska Botanical Garden Master Plan

The ABG Master Plan was revised in 2002 by nationally renowned landscape
architect Carol R. Johnson
in conjunction with local Landscape Architecture
firm Earthscape
, and again in 2009 by the ABG Design Committee.

The Plan provides the conceptual framework for future developments
of the Garden, which
include:

  • A visitor center with reception & education areas
  • New gardens in addition to the existing Perennial, Rock, and Herb Gardens
  • An outdoor amphitheater
  • A horticulture and maintenance building
  • On-site parking
  • Overlook towers to view the Chugach Range

Developments in recent years include:

  • Entrance area upgrades, paving, welcome kiosk and planting of
    entry shade garden
  • Installation of a new "East" garden, designed by Carol R. Johnson
with assistance from Earthscape and Northwest Landscape, Inc.
  • Planting of ABG's first fruit trees and Gold Medal Peony Collection
    in the new "East" garden.
  • Installation of a perimeter fence, followed by gate design upgrades
to keep moose out - to allow ABG to diversify plantings
  • Lengthening of the sled dog mushing trail that runs through the
    Garden
  • Electrification of the Garden Nursery area, including lights and
electrical outlets in the barn and Shop-in-the-Garden
  • Installation of a water well in the nursery, and conversion to well-fed
    irrigation for all gardens
