The Garden is open daylight hours year round. The
Garden Shop is open year round too - but the Nursery will reopen in May.

Workshop: Taming & Tending Your Perennial Garden


Do you want to have perennial blooms throughout the season? Join ABG's Mike Monterusso to learn to control and maintain your perennial garden. This workshop includes information about tools, dividing and propagating perennials. The class is outside and hands-on, so please dress properly and bring gardening gloves. All participants will take home a divided perennial to add to their garden.

Workshop: Growing & Enjoying Herbs with Julie Riley


The ABG Herb Garden contains a wide variety of culinary and medicinal herbs, and this year features Artemesia as Herb of the Year. Learn which plants are winter hardy perennials and those biennials that will reseed. Taste herbs with the best 'lemony' and 'licorice' essence. Participants will take home a few small bunches of herbs to air dry and cilantro seed for mid-summer planting.

Workshop: Building a Wattle Fence


Wattle fences have been used since medieval times as a popular, easy-to-construct, low-cost alternative to stone or timber. This traditional style of fence building is a beautiful way to add texture and functionality into your garden. Learn how to build your own wattle fence with staff from the Alaska Botanical Garden. This workshop will be hands-on and all outdoors, so please make sure you dress properly for the weather. Also, please bring gloves with you

Plastic Pot Recycling Day (One Day Only!)


Join ALPAR & ABG to recycle types 2, 5, & 7 plastic pots. Please do not dump pots a Garden - this event is one day only!

Enjoy a Fall Harvest Festival with a scarecrow contest, family fun & games, food, vendors. View our new Anchorage Heritage Garden!

Plant a Row for the Hungry! Food drive & harvest for Bean's Cafe, the Children's Lunchbox, & the Food Bank of Alaska.

Workshop: Growing Garlic in Alaska


Join Julianne McGuinness for a hands-on garlic tasting and planting session. Learn about the many varieties of garlic that perform well in Southcentral Alaska gardens. Participants will take home some garlic to plant in their own gardens.

Be sure to dress for the outdoors and bring your gardening gloves!

October 4

Workshop: Worm Bins, Compost Bins, and Has-beens with Ellen Vande Visse


Join Ellen Vande Visse of Good Earth Garden School for a fun workshop on composting and vermicomposting. Ellen has been has been training folks how to farm and garden using organic methods since 1987 and is the author of Ask Mother Nature: A Consious Gardener's Guide.

During this owrkshop, you will refine your skills on how to operate the Earth Machine composter, effectively combine browns & greens, manage indoor worm bins, avoid flies and stink, and produce a top-quality product. This workshop is appropriate for beginners and experience composters alike. 

This workshop will take place indoors and outdoors, so please dress appropriately.
